Introduction and Acknowledgements

The Art of the Book '03, a juried exhibition of members' work, celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists’ Guild. In 1988, the CBBAG held its first exhibition and since then has held one every five years. With each exhibition the quality and variety of the work has grown stronger and the number of entries has increased.

As the exhibition travels across the country, many people will have the opportunity to admire the craftsmanship and creativity of these works. The originality and artistic merit of these pieces will provide standards and inspiration for the book arts community.

I would like to thank the members of the jury, Carol Barton, Alan Stein, and Michael Wilcox, for their scrupulous work and discriminating eyes. I would also like to thank all the CBBAG members who have contributed their time, donations, efforts, and expertise in the creation of this exhibition. In particular, special thanks go to curators Shelagh Smith and Susan Corrigan, whose combined energy has ensured that this exhibition, like the previous ones, will be superb.

CBBAG thanks Sharon Foster, who has designed the exhibition catalogue, and Edward Hutchins for his insightful article. The exceptional photography is the work of Thomas Moore. CBBAG would also like to thank The Japanese Paper Place for the generous donation of endpapers for this catalogue.

CBBAG gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and Harbourfront Centre and thanks The McLean Foundation, The Henry N.R. Jackman Foundation, the J.P. Bickell Foundation, The K.M. Hunter Charitable Foundation, and the Ontario Arts Council for their generous support in making this exhibition possible.

As well, CBBAG would like to thank the award donors: Bookmakers, The Japanese Paper Place, Colophon Book Arts Supply, Inc., Woolfitt's Art Enterprises Inc., La papeterie St. Armand, Talas, J. Hewit & Sons Ltd., Harmatan Leather Ltd., Lee Scott McDonald, and The Lewis and Ruth Sherman Foundation.

The Online Exhibition

There are 74 pieces in the exhibition, including one from each of the jurors, the contributor, and the curators, and ten prize-winning entries. The exhibition has been divided into several smaller groups: the entire exhibition can be viewed on one page as a series of thumbnail images linked to larger versions of the entries, with full, bilingual captions. The captions accompanying the thumbnails indicate title, artist, category, and, in the case of the prize-winners, the award won. If you prefer you may view one page showing the prize-winning entries, and individual pages for each of the categories. Each of these pages, in addition to the information given on the thumbnails page, includes a description, dimensions, and date for each piece accompanied by a large-scale image.

There is also a page each for the Curators' Statement and an essay by contributor Edward Hutchins.
