I wanted to create a book that evoked the spirit of the West and alluded to key aspects of the plot. I found the bocote wood in a scrap heap and immediately recognized its potential as a way to depict the crazed and suspicious crowd or more specifically, the three unfortunate mob victims. The binding style also suited the book in the way the wood, tooled leather spine, and thread were laced and tied together, reminiscent of knot work, fence posts, and saddles.
