I considered how many lives and events these walls in their various forms must have witnessed over the centuries. The Latin text lettered on the back of the book comes from Sutorius’ description of the rebuilding of Rome after the fire during the reign of Nero. I chose canvas as the support for the book because of the widespread use of this material in Roman architectural settings in both ancient and modern times (roofs, awnings, umbrellas). The piece is (of course!) designed to be hung on a wall.
