August 2009 - Information from Library and Archives Canada regarding Legal Deposit

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) values the relationship it has established over the years with you, its stakeholders, clients and suppliers, in building the national fonds for the benefit of present and future generations.

In May 2009, LAC wrote to inform you of a short-term moratorium on purchased acquisitions. The institution appreciates receiving your feedback and would like to assure you that your questions and concerns are being heard and considered at this time. Today, LAC would like to provide you with the latest information on the moratorium.

As a responsible national public institution, LAC must demonstrate due diligence in building Canada's documentary heritage or "continuing memory." Over the next few months the institution will continue reviewing its approach to acquisitions to ensure that LAC purchases the most important materials to add to the fonds. As you know, the information environment is exploding with new forms of digital information that challenge all knowledge institutions to change what and how they collect. That said, LAC must ensure that the documentary heritage the institution acquires and preserves today, whether it is rare books, electronic publications or other essential materials, truly represents Canada's collective memory and content of greatest value to Canadians in the future.

The moratorium is part of LAC's ongoing efforts to modernize the institution, including the development of an acquisition strategy that adequately and fairly reflects all components of Canadian society. As the stewards of the largest and most significant collection of Canadian documentary heritage in the world, LAC is working with other institutions and stakeholders across Canada to determine which materials should be included in the collection, to be preserved for present and future generations.

LAC will continue to work closely with you during this important review period. Once the institution has completed its review, expected this fall, LAC will share its findings with you and inform you about the new parameters that will guide the purchase of acquisitions.

For more information, please contact Gillian Cantello, A/Director General of Published Heritage at gillian.cantello@lac-bac.gc.ca or 819-934-6773, or myself at doug.rimmer@lac-bac.gc.ca or 819-934-5790.

Thank you for your continued support.
