Introduction and Acknowledgements

The Art of the Book '08, a juried exhibition of members' work, celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild. In 1988, CBBAG held its first exhibition and since then has held one every five years. With each exhibition the quality and variety of the work has grown stronger and the number of entries has increased.

As the exhibition travels across the country, many people will have the opportunity to admire the craftsmanship and creativity of these works. We hope the originality and artistic merit of these pieces will provide standards and inspiration for the Canadian book arts community.

I would like to thank the members of the jury, Nicole Billard, Crispin Elsted, and Edward Hutchins, for their scrupulous work and discriminating eyes. I would also like to thank all the CBBAG members who have contributed their time, donations, efforts, and expertise in the creation of this exhibition. In particular, special thanks go to curators Shelagh Smith and Susan Corrigan, whose combined energy has ensured that this exhibition, like the previous ones, will be superb.

CBBAG thanks Kathe Gray, who has designed this catalogue, and Peter Sramek for his insightful article. The exceptional photography is the work of Anna Prior. CBBAG would also like to thank Spicers Paper, Barney Printing, and Ron Ingle for their contributions towards the production of this catalogue.

CBBAG gratefully acknowledges the Canada Council for the Arts, The McLean Foundation, the Jackman Foundation, the J.P. Bickell Foundation, and the Ontario Arts Council for their generous support in making this exhibition possible.

As well, CBBAG would like to thank the award donors: Colophon Book Arts Supply, Inc., Harmatan Leather Ltd., J. Hewitt & Sons Ltd., The Japanese Paper Place, Papeterie Saint-Armand, and Woolfitt's Art Enterprises Inc.
