Catalogue No: 1

title: Japanese Style Papermaking 1: Simple Equipment and Techniques

presenter - author: Barrett, Timothy

publisher - source: University of Iowa Center for the Book

production date: 1994

viewing length: 70 minutes

comments: Excellent sound and picture. Video appears largely unscripted although a transcript is supplied. It therefore rambles a bit and is about a third too long because of repetitive processes shown, like removal of many pages of paper after drying. Excellent introduction to the topic. The promise on the video of a bibliography and suppliers' list is, in fact, not included either in the pamphlet nor on the tape. [br]

production date: 1994

viewing length: 25 minutes

Catalogue No: 6

title: The Art of Bookbinding

presenter- author: Charriere, Gerard

publisher - source: Produced and directed by Nina Ryan

viewing length: 17 minutes

comments: Excellent quality, basically an interview with Charriere which gives his philosophy of binding and shows a few of his works. A very short visit to Talas with Elaine Haas to pick two skins of leather is also included. Shows very short clips of sewing on a frame and gold tooling with a roll. [br]

Catalogue No: 7

title: Bookbinding

presenter - author: Bagshawe, C.

Publisher - source: Thinkware Productions, Vancouver

production date: 1987

viewing length: 52 minutes

comments: Many details not shown like putting tapes in key for sewing frame, appears made without a script which leads to breaks in the flow. Basically a case binding demonstration for beginners. At the conclusion some different kinds of bindings are shown and described. Some technical points are included that a few binders might take exception to, for example pasting only the tops of sewing tapes. Picture and sound quality quite good. [br]

Catalogue No: 8

title: Gold Tooling Spine

presenter - author: Wilcox, Michael, & Glaister, Donald

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1984

viewing length: 2 hours

comments: A splendid video. For anyone who thought that there was only one way to do anything, this will be worth watching. Michael Wilcox shows a traditional gold tooling style with handle letters. Excellent detail and the close-up video and sound are wonderful. The next section of the video is another style of tooling shown by Donald Glaister who uses brass type and a type holder and a different method altogether. Unfortunately, the Glaister section continues beyond the length of the tape and we never get to see how the story comes out. The picture quality is not as good in the second half and there a few sound glitches at a critical time in the demonstration. Nevertheless, taken as a whole this is a highly recommended video. The demonstration by Wilcox is also available (at a different time and place) in Catalogue No 11. [br]

Excellent presentation. The sound is good. The demonstrations were nicely visible. [ms]

Catalogue No: 9

title: Covering Fine Bindings in Full Leather

presenter - author: Anthony, Bill

publishers - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1985

viewing length: 1 hour 40 minutes

comments: The first part is pretty well wasted because the sound is terribly bad. One cannot hear the questions from the audience so one has to guess from the answer which is also not always audible. The second part is better - mainly because of the close-ups which are quite good. [ms]

Catalogue No: 10

title: Conservation & Repair of Japanese Works of Art

presenter - author: Yamanchi,

Catalogue No: 11

title: Gold Tooling

presenter - author: Wilcox, Michael, & Charriere, Gerard

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1983

viewing length: 2 hours 5 minutes

comments: Excellent video. The first hour is the demonstration by Charriere on gold tooling at the edges of onlays (mosaic) using shellac based glaire with techniques for the use of the roll, palettes, and the gouge. Very thorough. Sound and video are good and there are lots of close-ups so that one can really see what’s going on. The second hour is Michael Wilcox’s presentation of traditional gold tooling with palette and handle letters using egg glaire. This section is a repeat of the same techniques in Catalogue No 8. A highly recommended video. [br]

Very inspiring, clear instructions, careful work, and cautions make video an excellent teaching session. [r w-s]

Catalogue No: 12

title: Rebacking Leather Bound Books

presenter - author: Levy, Bruce

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1987

viewing length: 2 hours

comments: A terrific video. Both sound and picture are good. Techniques include leather preparation and re-backing as well as corners. Some good work with end-paper repairs and joint treatments. Also some tool talk, particularly Bruce's choice of a Tandy skiving knife re-manufactured. Good viewing and recommended. [br]

The abrupt start is a little disconcerting and the slide presentation rather boring and would have preferred the time used to finish the session. Content is excellent and Bruce is an efficient craftsman working in an efficient work space. Good close-ups. Worth repeated viewings. [r w-s]

Good sound, mostly good pictures. Enough close ups to follow the work. Sometimes the angle does not allow seeing what is being done. Very useful. [ms]

Catalogue No: 13

title: Half Vellum over Boards (Copy 1)

presenter - author: Rennie, Silvia

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1985

viewing length: 2 hours

comments: Very difficult to watch and to listen to. Both sound and picture quality are poor to moderate. Rennie offers many tips and suggestions gathered from her training with Peller for working with vellum. Worthwhile content but only for the dedicated viewer. [br]

Catalogue No: 14

title: Conservation Treatments

presenter - author: Etherington, Don

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1991

viewing length: 2 hours 27 minutes

comments: A video only for the most dedicated. The picture quality is reasonable but the sound quality is extremely poor throughout. Tape shows the repair of leather and cloth joints with Japanese paper. [br]

Catalogue No: 15

title: Paper Repairs for Bookbinders

presenter - author: Eldridge, Betsy Palmer

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1989

viewing length: 2 hours

comments: Picture and video quality is moderately poor but possible to watch without too much discomfort. Much is taped with the bright window as background and with the window open to lots of street noise. Content is excellent, presenter never lets audience sway her from the topic. Very worthwhile viewing despite technical video limitations. Keep a pad and pencil handy. Tape runs out before the end of the session. [br]

The content of this presentation is aimed at paper conservators working on books who understand the chemistry, technology, equipment, and jargon of conservation and Betsy does not deal with paper repair very much. There is little demonstration compared to oral presentation. Excellent content for paper conservators. [r w-s]

Catalogue No: 16

title: Edge to Edge Doublures

presenter - author: Lallier, Monique

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1990

viewing length: 2 hours

comments: An excellent video. The picture and sound quality are both quite good. An interesting technique to consider and there are also a few tips for working with suede which are otherwise very difficult to find. Highly recommended to anyone working in more exotic styles. [br]

Catalogue No: 17

title: French Onlay Techniques & Gilding

presenter - author: Miura, Kirstin Tini

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1990

comments: Excellent video. Good sound and picture quality. Demonstrations and close-ups well organized. Tape runs out before the end. Very interesting crinkle leather onlay demonstration. [ms]

Catalogue No: 18

title: Second International Marbling Gathering

presenter - author: California Marblers Guild

production date: 1992

Catalogue No: 19

title: Suminigashi

presenter - author: Guyot, Don

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1989

comments: It is almost impossible to get anything out of this video. The sound is so bad that only a few words here and there are comprehensible. Since most of it is talking – the demonstration is only a short part – the video is of very limited use. [ms]

Catalogue No: 20

title: Japanese Bookbinding

presenter-author: Atwood, Catherine

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1988

Catalogue No: 21

title: Board Preparation; Paring, Turn-ins, Corners

presenter-author: Etherington, Don

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

viewing length: 2 hours

comments: Good quality sound and picture. Very worthwhile viewing. Runs out of tape before mounting the leather on the boards or doing the corners as might be expected from the title. Lots of discussion of board shapes and shows spokeshaving of both boards and leather. [br]

Catalogue No: 22

title: Gougeless Onlays

presenter-author: Rennie, Silvia

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1988 (1984?)

Viewing length: 1 hour 30 minutes

comments: The demonstration is quite good and the sound quality is acceptable. However, there are very few close-ups of the work in progress and therefore the video is of limited value except from what can be learned from the talking. The last third of the video is taken up with slides of Rennie's work. Still a worthwhile view. [br]

Very good demonstration. Good sound except at the beginning. I played it three times and still could not figure out what she uses for her templates. [ms]

Catalogue No: 23

title: Tool Sharpening

presenter-author: Brock, David

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1985

viewing length: 2 hours

comments: A good introduction to tool sharpening. The author makes reference to many books he has studied to prepare the demonstration. There are slides at the beginning showing the recommended criteria for sharpening for bookbinding. Japanese water stones are demonstrated

and the angle of bevel is discussed. There are only a few brief comments about oil stones. A worthwhile video with good picture and sound quality for anyone less familiar or uncomfortable with sharpening. [br]

Very good demonstration. Very useful. Too bad the lists given to the attendees are not attached. [ms]

Catalogue No: 24

title: Vellum over Stiff Boards

presenter-author: Pensky-Adam, Heinke

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1983

viewing length: 2 hours

comments: A good video with reasonably fine picture and sound. Questions from the floor can’t be heard but the answers are. The topic is not covered as the video only lasts to a point briefly after the break. The vellum is attached to the spine but we don't get to see the headcap

formation or the turn-ins. There is a brief excursion into a discussion of tooling and some other distractions from the topic but even here there is valuable information. A worthwhile video because there is little available on working with vellum compared to leather. Some very good technical tips. Recommended. [br]

Catalogue No: 25

title: Half Vellum over Boards (Copy 2, see Catalogue No: 13)

Catalogue No: 26

title: Bindings and Techniques

presenter-author: Peller, Hugo

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1983

viewing length: 2 hours

comments: Presenter speaks little English but with the help of a translator the video is an excellent watch. Opens with an autobiography in German which is translated sentence by sentence (but the German version is much more fun!). Followed by showing slides of Peller’s works. Finally, he shows in excellent detail his process of edge gilding. More than adequate picture and audio quality. [br]

Good sound. Interesting bindings, good demonstrations. [ms]

Catalogue No: 27

title: Turkish Paper Marbling

presenter-author: Gourley, Paula

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1986

comments: Great video. Sound excellent. Picture quality better than most. Instructions clear with good close-ups. [ms]

Catalogue No: 28

title: Doublures, Endpapers, & Leather Hinges

presenter-author: Anthony, William

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1986

comments: Very good. Sound and picture quality excellent. Very useful with good close-ups. [ms]

Catalogue No: 29

title: Collaboration between Binder & Printer

presenter-author: Jensen, Craig, & Rummonds, Richard-Gabriel

publisher - source: Istor/Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1987

Catalogue No: 30

title: Rebacking Cloth Bindings

presenter-author: Davis, J.

Publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1985

viewing length: 2 hours

Catalogue No: 31

title: Paper Case Construction: Conservation Rebinding

presenter-author: Frost, Gary

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1984

viewing length: 2 hours

comments: Lots of discussion about historical prototypes of case bindings. The model shown, the paper covered case, is quite different than the traditional bookstore case bindings found everywhere. Good technical tips and the sound and video quality are fine. Considerable time is given over to showing slides of various bindings, which in this video is not so successful. A reserved recommendation, but worth the trouble for the keen binder. [br][jc]

Catalogue No: 32

title: Special Enclosures

presenter-author: Kyle, Hedi

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1991

viewing length: 2 hours 35 minutes

Catalogue No: 33

title: Expandable Piano Hinge Album

presenter-author: Kyle, Hedi

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1991

viewing length: 2 hours 35 minutes

comments: Inspired by a Victorian album at the New York Center for the Book Arts, book innovator Hedi Kyle makes a model book of heavy card with hinging on a concertina structure at the spine. She also displays several other limp paper bindings – fan shape, slotted cover, or two sections sewn together. It is entertaining to watch her work, but sometimes hard to follow her directions. [jc]

Hedi is a sweetheart! There is a lot of useful information. It might be more useful to have already made an expandable hinge album but the video offers some wonderful ideas to everyone. [sb]

Catalogue No: 34

title: Case Binding

presenter-author: Bourbeau, David

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1991

viewing length: 2 hours 35 minutes

Catalogue No: 35

title: Tools & Techniques of Paper Repair

presenter-author: Meierjames, Barbara L.

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1987

comments: A good video. Sound has been overdubbed after the event. Most of the time is taken up showing various tools used in paper repair. Very little ‘technique’ is shown and no repairs are actually made but the techniques described and demonstrated are excellent. A tape worth watching to set the stage for your own experimentation with paper repairs. Many tips and tricks relating to the tools themselves. [br]

Catalogue No: 36

title: Technique & Logic in German Bookbinding

presenter-author: Mowery, Franklin

publisher - source: Guild of Bookworkers

production date: 1990

viewing length: 2 hours

comments: Good sound from presenter but audience question sound quality is very poor. Picture quality is reasonable but poorly lit. Worth watching! Techniques are very well explained and demonstrated although somewhat rushed in places. Shows a good contrast to more typically known English style binding techniques and philosophy. [br]

Catalogue No: 42

title: Books in General Collections: Paper Repair and Pockets

presenter-author: Milevski, Robert

publisher - source: Library of Congress

production date: 1985

viewing length: 1 hour 20 minutes

comments: Excellent video, professionally produced by the Library of Congress. Content is well organized and well presented. Some talk of adhesives and shows cooking paste in very small quantities. Many repair techniques shown. Highly recommended. [br]

Excellent basic information about adhesives, paper, methods. Explanations were precise and understandable and visuals were great. I particularly liked seeing the paste consistency and the straining process. Shows two types of map or enclosure pockets. [vb] [p mcl][r w-s]

viewing length: 1 hour

Catalogue No: 44

title: Books in General Collections: Recasing

presenter-author: Etherington, Don

publisher - source: Library of Congress

viewing length: 1 hour 20 minutes

comments: An excellent video from the Library of Congress series. Recasing a cloth case is intended to show librarians working in repair stations ‘how-to’ and the video does this very nicely. A highly recommended tape, sound and video quality are very high. [br]
