Art of the Book 2018

This seventh juried travelling exhibition of members' work marks CBBAG's 35th Anniversary.

The exhibition will open 10 August 2018 in Victoria and travel across Canada until the fall of 2020.

Since its inception CBBAG has maintained an ambitious exhibitions programme, circulating shows across Canada, and participating in local book arts events like The Word on the Street, the OCAD University's Book Arts Fair in Toronto, and the Grimsby Wayzgoose, held each April at the Public Library and Art Gallery in Grimsby, Ontario.

 Important shows have included The Art of the  Book in 1988, a juried members' exhibition organized to celebrate the 

  fifth  anniversary of CBBAG, The Art of the Book '93 at the time of CBBAG's tenth anniversary, and Meister der

  Einbandkunst,  a rare North American showcase of work by members of the German Masters Guild and organized by

  CBBAG. In  addition,  CBBAG sponsored the 1989 Canadian tour of Bookwork: Form-Function-Finish in the Modern

  Craft of Hand   Bookbinding, mounted by the New York-based Guild of Bookworkers.

CBBAG also developed and circulated a multi-media exhibit titled Two Centuries of Bookbinding: Materials and Techniques 1700-1900,designed for use in schools and libraries, which travelled across the country for two years. In 1995 CBBAG was invited to organize an exhibition of Contemporary Canadian Bookworks which was shown at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, Japan.

Fine Printing: The Private Press in Canada which opened at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, University of Toronto, in April 1995, toured Canada until October 1997. This was the first major exhibition of Canadian private press work to be shown in Toronto since the two seminal exhibitions of the book arts in Ontario held in 1978 and 1981 at the North York Public Library.

The Art of the Book '98, an exhibition of members' work celebrating CBBAG's 15th anniversary, opened on June 11,
 1998 at the Toronto Reference Library Canada Trust Gallery and travelled across the country for two years. The
 complete text (in English and French) and all images from the catalogue are now online.

The Art of the Book '03, a juried exhibition of members'work celebrating the twentieth anniversary of CBBAG, opened at the York Quay Gallery, Harbourfront Centre, on September 19, 2003, and travelled across Canada through 2005.


The Art of the Book '08, a juried exhibition of members'work celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of CBBAG, travelled to seven locations across Canada from 2008 to 2011.

   Art of the Book 2013 a juried exhibition of members'work celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of  

   CBBAG. The exhibition opened in Calgary and travelled to six locations across Canada through early 2015.

Both community exhibitions are presented in a box portfolio and is available for  for loan by small galleries, museums, libraries, schools.
