German Bookbinding Techniques

This workshop is a senior-level course focusing on German bookbinding techniques as illustrated in the diagrams of the masterwork of German bookbinding, Der Bucheinband, by Fritz Wiese, including headband and sewing techniques.


Betsy Palmer Eldridge apprenticed as a bookbinder in Hamburg, Germany, studied finishing with Jules Fache in Paris, and worked in conservation with Carolyn Horton and Associates in New York in the 60s. She has had her own Studio in Toronto since 1975, and has taught courses and workshops in bookbinding and conservation since in 1984. She has been active in professional organizations both nationally and internationally.
