Education Opportunities

From its founding in 1983 education has been at the core of CBBAG programmes. Each yearbook arts teaching workshops are organized by CBBAG chapters across Canada. Workshops vary from half-day mini workshops to weeklong intensive courses offering a wide variety of topics serving the needs of the beginner through master level book artist, both traditional and contemporary.

The objective of the CBBAG education programme is that courses be as accessible as possible while providing full instruction, ultimately enabling the participant to function independently as a book artist or bookbinder. CBBAG offers bookbinding instruction in a number of ways: in-person instruction, on demand online instruction, live online instruction, and home study.

CBBAG is organized into regional chapters and chapters often run workshops in their regions; please see the list of CBBAG chapters.

Please check with your local CBBAG chapter for updates on planned events in your region.

CBBAG offers registration on this website for the following types of workshops:

  • In-person workshops organized by the Greater Toronto Area chapter
  • On demand online workshops through a subscription to From Bench To Book
  • Live online workshops
  • Guided Stream Home Study workshop for Bookbinding I

Registration for a workshop

Payment

CBBAG workshops are generally offered as benefit of membership.

If you are not currently a member, you do not need to join CBBAG separately from enrolling in a workshop. Simply choose the non-member price for the workshop and you will be purchasing an annual membership ($60 CAD per year) as part of your fee. If membership is required to enroll in a particular workshop, then two prices will be listed.

Click on "Workshops” to see currently workshops and to register with online payment by Visa or MasterCard. If you prefer to pay for a workshop by cheque or e-transfer, please contact workshop@cbbag.ca

If you are a member, you must login using the email that you set up your account with to get the member price.

The website will acknowledge your registration by email and provide a receipt. If you have not received your acceptance one week prior to the start of the workshop, please check your junk mail and then contact  workshop@cbbag.ca

General guidelines for enrolment

Some workshops require pre-requisites and those will be listed in the workshop details.

Registration in workshops is assigned on a chronological basis and is dependent on successful payment of fees. If the workshop is full, you can choose to be added to the wait list at no cost, which is also filled on a chronological basis. Interested folks are encouraged to join the wait list in case additional sessions of a class can be added.

If you wish to enroll a person under 18 years of age for an online workshop, please contact workshop@cbbag.ca prior to registration as acceptance is at the sole discretion of the instructor; please note that students under 18 must be accompanied by an adult who is also enrolled in the workshop and both must be part of the same family membership.

In-person workshops are limited to persons over 18 years of age.

Learning Environment

Not all in-person workshop venues will necessarily be wheelchair accessible and may require taking stairs. Any allergies or other environmental sensitivities should be mentioned to workshop@cbbag.ca after registration; CBBAG will do its best to accommodate students, however, CBBAG may be limited it its efforts to mitigate environmental issues.

Materials fees for in-person workshops, which are specified on the workshop detail page, are paid in cash to the instructor at the beginning of a workshop.

Tools and materials are supplied at the workshop, unless otherwise noted; participants may also bring their own hand tools if they wish.

Participants should plan to bring a brown bag lunch for in-person workshops (some workshops are in residential or industrial areas with no restaurants, etc., nearby).

Photography is permitted only for personal use; otherwise, permission must be obtained in writing from CBBAG.

Participants in online workshops are expected to have the correct software, equipment, and internet connectivity to participate in the workshop. Technical specifications are part of the workshop description.

Refunds or Cancellation

In general, participant-requested cancellations will be accepted up to 3 days prior to the published cut-off date for registration and will be subject to a 10% cancellation fee (a minimum of $5). After that, the full fee will be forfeited. Any deviation from this policy will be noted in the workshop registration details.

CBBAG reserves the right to cancel workshops due to insufficient enrollment by the published cut-off date for registration and fees for cancelled workshops will be fully refunded.

As well, CBBAG reserves the right to cancel or reschedule workshops without notice in the event of illness, accident, or any other unavoidable or unforeseen circumstance on the part of the instructor; fees for cancelled or rescheduled workshops will either be fully refunded or applied to the rescheduled workshop; participants who are unable to attend a rescheduled workshop will have their workshop fee fully refunded.

Membership fees (and the membership fee portion of the non-member fee) are not refundable.

Due to the intensive nature of CBBAG workshops, it is not possible to make up missed days; fees cannot be refunded.

CBBAG instructors have the right to dismiss disruptive participants; fees will not be refunded under these circumstances.

It is the responsibility of the participant to check the time zone in which online workshops are held. Generally, workshops will be held in the Eastern time zone.
