The Byzantine binding shares many attributes of the Coptic binding, with subtle refinements.  Although there have been many methods of building these books over the centuries, they typically have wood boards with carved cord channels, unsupported linked sewing stations, extended endbands, and peg/strap fastenings.

The first day will be spent preparing the wood boards, sew the text block and practise the complex endbands. Day two will be spent adding the endbands and building the fastenings. Typically, these books were covered with leather and although we will leave the base structure exposed, there will be a discussion about the application of leather and decoration.

Participants should have some woodworking aptitude and be comfortable dealing with complex sewing structures.

Stuart Hill has studied bookbinding with CBBAG under the guidance of Betsy Palmer Eldridge, Don Taylor, Dan Mezza and Rose Newlove. With a background in engineering and architecture, his keen interest is in the discovery of book structures.  Please visit Stuart’s website: www.georgehillco.com
