In-Person Open Studio Workshop: Marbling with Dan Mezza

Marbling is a method for creating patterned decorative papers by floating pigment on the surface of a thickened medium and using a variety of combs and rakes to achieve a desired pattern before transferring the pigment to a suitable prepared paper. Marbled papers are used in bookbinding, box-making, mixed media, scrapbooking, collage, etc.

In this open studio workshop we will learn how to create beautiful decorative papers using the European techniques of paper marbling using acrylic paints as the pigment. We will see a demonstration on how to prepare acrylic paints and carrageenan and how to alum paper. Hands outs will be provided with various marbling patterns for participants to try.

Please note: This is an open studio event. Although a brief demonstration of the process will be offered at the beginning, you will be working without further formal instruction for the two-day period. Dan Mezza will be on hand to answer questions.

Dan Mezza is a papermaker, bookbinder, and restorer living in London, Ontario. He studied bookbinding with Don Taylor and Betsy Palmer Eldridge, and papermaking with Helmut Becker. Dan is a graduate of the Visual Arts Programme at the University of Western Ontario and is a past president of CBBAG.
