ONLINE: Laced Case Paper Binding with Andrew Huot

In this workshop we will explore the laced case paper binding. The pages are sewn on paper tapes for the sewing supports.

When the supports are laced into the paper cover it makes a flexible and strong attachment between the text block and cover.

Your finished book will open well, making it ideal to use as a sketchbook or journal.

Andrew Huot is a book artist, bookbinder, printer, and conservator in Scarborough, ON, where he operates Big River Bindery, a studio for bookmaking, letterpress printing, and book conservation. He holds a Masters in Book Arts from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and a BS in Printmaking from Portland State University.

His artists’ books use photographs, linoleum cuts, and text to share the humorous side of everyday life around us. His artists’ books are in collections across the country, from the Art Institute of Chicago to Yale University. Andrew teaches online and in his own studio, taught at the University of Illinois School of Information Science and workshops across the US and in Canada at CBBAG, the John C Campbell Folk School, Book Arts LA, the International Preservation Studies Center, and the Guild of Book Workers, among others. These materials make a 7” x 5” (17.78 cm x 12.7 cm) book when closed.

Text paper, grain short 7” x 10” wide (17.78 cm x 25.4 cm) - 32 pieces for 8 sections

Cover Weight Paper for cover 7” x 22” (17.78 cm x 55.88 cm)

Cover Weight Paper for paper tapes - 2 pieces - 1” x 7” (2.54 cm x 17.78 cm), grain short - Note: A strong paper works best, handmade paper of flax or linen or toned tyvek works for this as well.

Bookbinding thread - 18/3 weight

Craft Knife – xacto, olfa, etc.

Awl

Metal ruler
