ONLINE:  Accordion with a Hard Case with Andrew Huot

The accordion book structure is a great option when making books, it opens wide to view the entire book and has no sewing or imposition. 

The problem comes when you want to protect and present it. 

A hard cover is just the answer, but how to put it together. 

In this workshop we’ll be making an accordion and a cover and exploring how to pair these elements for a readable and protected book.

Andrew Huot is a book artist, bookbinder, printer, and conservator in Scarborough, ON, where he operates Big River Bindery, a studio for bookmaking, letterpress printing, and book conservation. He holds a Masters in Book Arts from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and a BS in Printmaking from Portland State University.

His artists’ books use photographs, linoleum cuts, and text to share the humorous side of everyday life around us. His artists’ books are in collections across the country, from the Art Institute of Chicago to Yale University. Andrew teaches online and in his own studio, taught at the University of Illinois School of Information Science and workshops across the US and in Canada at CBBAG, the John C Campbell Folk School, Book Arts LA, the International Preservation Studies Center, and the Guild of Book Workers, among others. Course fee: $65 members / $125 non-members

This is a live workshop, but it will be recorded, and links will be made available for the registrants to view until available until April 24, 2026.

MATERIALS

• Text weight paper – 5 strips of 7” x 24” grain short. (12.7 x 61 cm)
• Text weight paper – 1 piece 5” x 7” grain long (12.7 cm x 17.8 cm) may be decorated, for a pastedown endpaper
• Binders Board – 2 pieces 5” x 7” grain long (12.7 cm x 17.8 cm), 1 piece 2” x 7” grain long (5 cm x 17.8 cm)
• Binders board scraps – 2 pieces about 1” x 6” (2.5 cm x 15.2 cm) should be the same thickness as your cover boards
• Book Cloth – 1 piece 9” x 16” (22.8 cm x 40.6 cm)
• PVA

Cancellation policy:

Participant-requested cancellations will be accepted up to 3 days prior to the published cut-off date for registration and will be subject to a 10% cancellation fee (a minimum of $5). After that, the full fee will be forfeited. In the event of the workshop being cancelled by CBBAG, the workshop fee will be fully refunded.
